The Best of Fashion from 2010

by Shannon Crocker and Courtney Young

We immersed ourselves in style in 2010 and found looks that exceeded our own expectations. That includes this fave look captured by British photographer Nico Morgan. It would be hard to beat this perfect blend of rugged (note worn jeans and hiking boots) and refined (note Burberry tie and tweed jacket). JCrew take note.

And who could forget this jaw-dropper trotted out by top eventer Lauren Kieffer. She may have claimed a lack of fashion know-how but her look would never betray it. Her dark belt accentuates her figure and the simple cream looks sophisticated while also setting off her bright little horse, Snooze Alarm. It also highlights his star making his turnout really shine.  Throw in her confident smile and his perky ears and you’ve got yourself a winning look.

Allison Springer always stands out at jogs (so does her horse Arthur) and this one is no exception. She makes it into the best of fashion for 2010 thanks to her always-sharp and tailored looks accessorized by her Charlie’s Angels attitude showing that confidence enhances already natural beauty.

What, did you think the riders can steal all the spotlight? These ground judges from Rolex 2010 prove otherwise. Our favorite is the judge on the left in his Carolina blue hat and bright red Crans. Try it if you dare, but it would be best if you can also offer brown curls at the just-right length. The navy blazer with classic brass buttons keeps this looks in balance. A definite best-of for 2010 that partners risk with classic good looks.

What will 2011 bring? We won’t have to wait too long with Spring 3-day events hovering on the horizon. Start planning those outfits now!

  1. Love it! What will 2011 bring? ;-)

  2. A fashionista blog is also possible for the worst offenders in eventing. Unfortunately, the most sartorially compromised are often the loveliest people (and riders…) and to poke fun at their lack of dress success would be unnecessary and cruel. But sometimes…you just want to grab the worst offenders and give them a makeover…It should not cost the earth. I heard of two girls at Melbourne 3DE who were so shocked by a fellow rider’s dirty jeans and wrinkled shirt at the first jog, that they went into the closest town, to a thrift store (also called “Vinnies”) and bought him a new white shirt, a tie, a grey pin stripe suit and a pair of black leather shoes – for under $20.

  3. You forgot to include the ever handsome Will Coleman who is always very stylish and Stephanie Rhodes-Bosch who really had the BESt look at Rolex in that “perfect polo dress”

  4. HELLO!!
WHY Has HILDA DONAHUE not been noted in your fashion section?
As all event riders/ground juries know she ALWAYS presents herself and her mounts impeccably.
Hilda may not be the high pofile rider with the dollars and supporters of many fortunate riders, however she always looks incredible at every jog from the CCI * to CCI **** level. She has won several Best Turned Out Awards in 2010,includinding the Zeppa Award at Rolex in ’10…..many of us are wondering WHY she has not been noted by Eventingnation????

  5. Hi Andre – Thanks for your input! The truth is there are SO MANY well-dressed eventers and well-turned out horses out there! I love your avid support of such an excellent rider. We will be keeping an eye on this talented (and stylish) rider!

  6. Stephanie Rhodes-Bosch WAS one of our absolute favorites from this year! You are absolutely right. I also want to echo our first posted comment. While we were watching the jog at the WEG, I commented on the lack of polish with a certain rider, and someone near us said, “well their team had no funding…” and I empathize with that. Believe me, I do. However, you cannot tell me you couldn’t find boot polish to borrow at the drop of a hat on any given aisle at any competition! Clean and tidy is the minimum, fashion is the goal! And in the end we have the utmost respect for all the riders out there. If it was easy, everyone would do it. ;-)

  7. Also, I’d like to point out that Courtney picked the top photo in this post, I would have halted at the dirty jeans but there’s no accounting for taste, right? :P
